New routine

In my recent trip to Seattle, I  had unexpectedly discover that I gained 10 lbs over the last couple of month.  My first reaction was that the scale was broken until my little girl step on the scale.  I blame this little misfortune on our smaller bathroom after last year's move.  The bathroom was so small that you cannot even open the door without bumping the person inside.  Without a scale, I have no conscience when I over eat and not exercise.

I pretty much had the luxury of not worrying about over weight for the past 30 some years of my life, so I shouldn't really complain.  I was underweight for the most part.  In college, I don't even qualify for blood donation because I fail the weight requirement.  My last weight hike is after I finish college and start working.  With regular meal and less all nighters and no walking around campus, I gain 10 lb in mere 6 month.  Funny that I thought the scale was broken too that time.   Having two children didn't effect on my weight.  I had such bad morning sickness, my weight always drop and then come back up to my normal range.   So the last 15+ years, I fluctuated between 110 and 118, but had never past that.

Well, I must be getting old.  The days of eating without consequences has gone.  So here is what I will do in my morning routine.

7:00 -- Get up, boil water for my tea.  Make breakfast for the family.
7:30 -- wake Evelyn up, while hubby will take Aaron. Help Evelyn with her hair.
7:45 -- Eat breakfast with kids.
8:00 -- Pack lunch for everyone. Pack Evelyn's school bag. Take out the meat to defrost. Write our nanny a note for the day
8:10 -- brush Evelyn's teeth
8:15 - kick Hubby and the kids out of the house.  clean up the table. vacuum the floor. clean up kid's bedroom. make the beds. open all the windows downstairs. take the robot vacuum out for a run.
8:30 - fast walk on treadmill for 20 minutes
8:50 - sit ups
9:00-9:15 shower
9:15-9:30 getting dressed. brush teeth, blow dry hair etc.
9:30 out of the door for work

Now this will get me to work about 10:00 everyday, which is a bit late. But consider A lot of my co-worker go workout in the afternoon, I think that should do for now.  Unless I want to get up at 6:30.  Then I can move 8:30-9:00 to 6:30-7:00.  Somehow getting up at 6:30 sounded very dreadful, especially when it comes to the fall. 6:30 is not even light out.

Do you have any tip for losing weight? Especially the guts?  I hate restraint eating.  I am so into food.  Maybe I will eat less Carb.  I must admit, I do eat more Carb more than I used to lately.

Here is an OOTD that I will submit to Cat on her weekly Anthro at work feature.

Top: Vanilla bean blouse I scored during my Chicago Trip
Bottom: Ann Taylor Loft Marisa Capri

  1. I have no idea how to lose the gut as I've tried so many times but I still have a little "pooch". I do know that if you want weight loss, you need to trick your body into thinking it's doing something different daily. Would you be interested in mixing in weights with cardio? I think weight training is key to maintaining a healthy body weight. Cardio gets the pounds off, but since you don't have a lot to lose, training with weights will help you maintain your weight a lot more and you can still eat normally! :)

  2. Yes, I know girls (and a lot of Asian girls) hate to build muscle, but muscle is what speeds the metabolism (especially after we have kids and get older). You don't have to look like a body builder or a guy...but strenghtening your bones and the muscles around them will also get you stronger. Form is very important though so make sure you don't start off too heavy and hurt yourself.

Also, for cardio, look up "High Intensity Inverval Training"...or HIIT. You can easily this on a treadmill or elliptical.

  3. I haven't thought about weight training. After reading about a little bit, I think my doing the ab cruches count as weight training too, but I need to extend that to other muscle group.

  4. I just found your blog. It's so funny. You sound exactly like me with the weight. I have never had to worry about weight either! With my 2 boys, I barely broke the 100lb mark. (I am only 4'11") But in the past few months, I've gained 5-6 lbs! I only have the night to myself, that's where I end up eating the sweets and probably gaining the pounds! Cute blog!

  5. When I first came to US, I stayed in dorm for the first semester. Merely four months, I gained 25lbs! I was pretty sure the scale was broken that time. But when I looked at my pictures later, I realized it was true. After I moved out of the dorm and started cooking myself, I lost most of the extra weight.....because I was such a terrible cook, hahaha....

  6. Gemma: I think that is how I end up with the weight hike too. Night eating. Right about midnight, I would crave for spicy korean noodle with poach egg.... and when hubby ask me 1 egg or 2 eggs, the answer rarely is 1.

NIcole: Now you are an expert baker, how come you still lose weight. I have been craving for the Chiffon cake for the whole last month.... I just bought a spring pan so I can try out your recipe. Thinking about using it for cheese cake too cuz someone said it is easy. bad bad bad!

  7. Funny. I get those midnight munchies myself and I never want a little snack. I always want a meal. That's precisely why I make sure I'm asleep by then so I'm not conscious of my midnight cravings. LoL. Spicy korean noodle soup. Yum!! Everyone has given you such great advice. I'll weigh in anyway. Cardio intervals and light weight training will get you to your goal. I'm a carb addict so I would never discourage anyone from eating less.

  8. You brought up a very good point others haven't brought up. Sleeping early is a good way to eliminate those midnight snacks. My only problem is like Gemma, I felt night time is the only time I have to myself. I was always reluctant to go to sleep, much like a child who is trying to dodge a nap, even though I know it is a good thing for me.

  9. Hi, I came across your blog while searching for reviews of a certain anthropologie purse, and I just wanted to comment with an idea for shedding extra pounds. I am 36 years old and have 4 kids. A year and a half ago I was around 122-124 lbs, which is very overweight for a person with a small asian frame. I lost 13 or so pounds using Jillian Michael's DVDs - most specifically 30 Day Shred and No More Trouble Zones. It took me a month of exercising almost everyday to lose the weight (after losing the weight, you just have to workout 3 times a week for maintenance). Give the videos a try, they are very short intense workouts (20 minutes) perfect for busy moms. No More Trouble zone is longer (40 mins daily) but is REALLY good for abs. You can look them up at amazon, lots of people have reviewed them. Good luck!

  10. I must have to say I really admire your persistence. With 4 kids, it must be so challenging to keep your workout. Our situation are very similar. I'd be sure to check out the DVD. I think my real challenge is to stick to anything as I so lack of self-discipline.
